Graduate Teaching Assistant – Primary School in Mitcham

Role: Year 1 – 1:1 Support

About the role:

Engage Education is working with a welcoming primary school in Mitcham that is looking to recruit an enthusiastic Graduate Teaching Assistant from mid-October.

You will be working primarily on a one-to-one basis with a child in Year 1, helping them to access learning, develop their confidence and make progress within the classroom.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Providing dedicated 1:1 support for a Year 1 pupil
• Supporting the pupil with their learning and engagement in the classroom
• Helping with phonics, literacy and numeracy activities
• Supporting the child’s social and emotional development
• Working closely with the class teacher and other support staff
• Preparing classroom resources and helping with learning activities
• Providing feedback on the pupil’s progress

No previous school experience is necessary, although experience working with children or young people would be beneficial.

The ideal candidate:

• A degree in any subject
• Enthusiastic and passionate about helping children reach their potential
• Strong literacy and numeracy skills
• Patient, reliable and able to build positive relationships with pupils
• An interest in education, teaching, psychology, SEND or child development would be beneficial
• Previous experience working with children is helpful but not essential

Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship option

For suitable candidates, there is also the opportunity to complete a fully funded Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship alongside the role.

The apprenticeship provides practical, school-based training while you work and earn, leading to a recognised Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification, with the potential to progress further within education.

No previous school experience is required for the apprenticeship route – the school is looking for someone with the right attitude, commitment and enthusiasm for working with children.
