Trainee Learning Support Assistant – Mainstream Primary School | Wimbledon (Merton)

Engage Education is working with a mainstream primary school in Wimbledon, in the London Borough of Merton, that is looking to appoint a caring and enthusiastic Trainee Learning Support Assistant (LSA). You will work 1:1 with a pupil with additional needs, helping them to access their learning and make a genuine difference to their day. No previous experience is needed, as this is a trainee position.

Start date: Mid-November 2026
Contract: Full time, term time only

About the role
You’ll be working closely with one pupil with additional needs, alongside the class teacher and the wider support team. The role offers a mix of in-class support and one-to-one work, and gives you the chance to build a strong, positive relationship with the pupil you support.

Your responsibilities will include:
– Supporting a pupil with additional needs on a 1:1 basis, both in class and in small group work
– Helping the pupil to access lessons and classroom activities, adapting your support to their needs
– Helping them build confidence in literacy, numeracy and wider curriculum subjects
– Supporting their social, emotional and behavioural development throughout the school day
– Preparing resources and helping to maintain an engaging learning environment
– Providing feedback to the class teacher on the pupil’s progress and engagement
– Encouraging positive behaviour and helping the pupil reach their full potential

This is an ideal opportunity for anyone considering teacher training (PGCE/SCITT), educational psychology, speech and language therapy or a long-term career within education.

The ideal candidate
No previous school experience is required. We’re looking for someone who is:
– Keen to start a career in education or working with children
– Passionate about supporting children’s learning and development
– Patient, empathetic and able to adapt their support to a child’s individual needs
– Calm, positive and resilient, even in challenging situations
– Able to build positive relationships with pupils and staff
– A strong communicator with good literacy and numeracy skills

Graduates, aspiring teachers, psychology students and candidates with childcare, nannying, youth work or sports coaching experience are all encouraged to apply.
