Engage Education is currently working with a supportive and welcoming SEN school in Rochdale that is looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated Woodwork Teacher to join their team.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who can inspire pupils through practical learning and help them develop valuable skills in a safe, supportive and inclusive environment.

The Role

As a Woodwork Teacher, you will plan and deliver engaging practical lessons that are adapted to meet the individual needs, abilities and interests of pupils.

You will support students in developing practical skills while also helping them build confidence, independence, resilience and positive attitudes towards learning.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and delivering engaging woodwork and practical lessons
  • Teaching pupils a range of woodworking and practical skills
  • Demonstrating the safe and appropriate use of tools and equipment
  • Ensuring all workshop activities are carried out safely
  • Adapting lessons to meet a range of SEN needs and abilities
  • Creating an inclusive, positive and supportive learning environment
  • Differentiating activities to ensure all pupils can participate
  • Supporting pupils to develop practical and vocational skills
  • Building positive and trusting relationships with pupils
  • Managing classroom and workshop behaviour positively and consistently
  • Encouraging pupils to develop independence, confidence and resilience
  • Assessing pupil progress and providing constructive feedback
  • Working closely with Teaching Assistants and wider school staff
  • Supporting pupils with social, emotional and behavioural needs
  • Maintaining high expectations for learning, behaviour and safety
  • Following school safeguarding, health & safety and workshop procedures

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will be:

  • Experienced in woodwork, carpentry, construction, design technology or a related practical subject
  • Passionate about supporting young people with additional needs
  • Confident teaching practical skills in a workshop environment
  • Patient, calm and resilient
  • Able to build strong relationships with pupils
  • Confident managing challenging behaviour
  • Creative and enthusiastic in their approach to practical learning
  • Safety-conscious and able to maintain high workshop standards
  • A strong communicator and team player
  • Committed to helping every pupil achieve their potential

Experience working within an SEN school, specialist provision, PRU, alternative provision or vocational education setting would be highly desirable. However, we would also welcome applications from experienced tradespeople or practical instructors who are passionate about supporting young people and are looking to move into education.
