About the role:

This SEND Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship is based within an Alternative Provision setting supporting KS3 and KS4 students who have been excluded, or at risk of being excluded from mainstream education. The setting is looking to recruit an enthusiastic and resilient apprentice to start after the May half term 2026.

You will support students with a range of additional needs including Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Autism, ADHD, trauma-related behaviours, and other SEND requirements. The role involves providing both 1:1 and small group support to help students re-engage with education and achieve positive outcomes.

We encourage applicants with backgrounds in care, youth work, support work, mentoring, sports coaching, residential care, or youth offending/prison services to apply.

Responsibilities:

  • Supporting students with SEND and SEMH needs on a 1:1 basis and in small groups
  • Assisting students with their educational, emotional, and behavioural development
  • Building positive relationships and acting as a consistent role model for young people
  • Supporting students to regulate behaviour and engage positively in learning
  • Adapting lesson materials and activities to meet individual learning needs
  • Providing feedback to teachers, pastoral teams, and parents/carers where appropriate
  • Promoting a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to begin a rewarding career supporting vulnerable young people in education.

The ideal candidate:

  • Enthusiastic, patient, and passionate about supporting young people
  • Resilient and confident working with challenging behaviour
  • Strong communication, numeracy, and literacy skills
  • Ability to build excellent relationships and rapport with students
  • A minimum 12-month commitment required to complete the apprenticeship
  • Not currently enrolled on any other government-funded programme
  • Must be available during school holidays to complete 20 hours of online training each half-term
  • Experience working with children, young people, or vulnerable adults is desirable
