Are you passionate about supporting children and young people with Autism and complex additional needs?

We are currently recruiting for a dedicated Complex Needs Support Worker to join a specialist school in Wakefield (WF7). The school provides high-quality education and personalised support for pupils aged 11–19 with complex Autism and Communication and Interaction needs.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is patient, resilient, compassionate and adaptable, with a genuine passion for helping young people develop their confidence, independence and communication skills.

About the School

The school is an established specialist provision supporting pupils with a wide range of complex needs. Pupils may present with:

  • Autism and complex communication needs
  • Sensory processing needs
  • Challenging or unpredictable behaviours
  • Speech, language and communication difficulties
  • Additional learning needs
  • Varying levels of independence

The school provides a safe, structured and nurturing environment, with a strong focus on understanding each pupil as an individual and adapting support to meet their specific needs.

You will join an experienced and supportive staff team who work closely together to help pupils achieve their individual goals.

The Role

As a Complex Needs Support Worker, you will work alongside teachers, therapists and other support staff to provide personalised support to pupils throughout the school.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting pupils with Autism and complex communication needs
  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support where required
  • Supporting pupils who may display challenging, sensory-driven or unpredictable behaviours
  • Helping pupils regulate their emotions and develop positive coping strategies
  • Creating a safe, calm and structured learning environment
  • Supporting pupils with personal care where required
  • Encouraging communication, engagement and independence
  • Adapting your approach to meet individual needs
  • Building positive and trusting relationships with pupils
  • Working collaboratively with teachers, therapists and wider support teams

The Ideal Candidate

We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience in support work, care, SEN, youth work, education or similar environments.

You may have experience supporting either children or adults with Autism or complex needs.

The successful candidate will ideally have:

  • Experience supporting individuals with Autism or complex additional needs
  • Confidence managing challenging behaviour in a calm and consistent manner
  • A patient, empathetic and nurturing approach
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to remain calm and resilient in challenging situations
  • A flexible and adaptable approach to supporting individual needs
  • The ability to build strong relationships with young people
  • A genuine passion for supporting children and young people
