School Caretaker – Burgess Hill

Full-Time | Start ASAP

Engage Education is working with a group of supportive schools in the Burgess Hill area to recruit a full-time School Caretaker. This is an excellent opportunity for a practical and dependable individual to take responsibility for the maintenance, security, and general upkeep of school premises.

The successful candidate will be based primarily at the Burgess Hill site, ensuring the school environment remains safe, welcoming, and fully operational. There will also be opportunities to support other nearby school sites when required.

About the role:

  • Taking responsibility for the day-to-day maintenance and upkeep of school buildings and grounds
  • Opening and closing the school site, ensuring premises are secure
  • Carrying out general repairs, maintenance tasks, and site checks
  • Supporting health and safety procedures and reporting any concerns
  • Ensuring the school environment remains clean, safe, and presentable
  • Liaising with contractors and external visitors attending the site
  • Assisting with deliveries, furniture moves, and general site requirements
  • Preparing rooms and facilities for meetings, events, and school activities
  • Monitoring premises equipment and reporting faults when required
  • Supporting other school locations within the wider organisation when needed

Working pattern:

  • Full-time position
  • Split shifts will be required when working at the Burgess Hill base school
  • When supporting other school sites, working hours will be standard non-split shifts
  • Travel between school locations may be required as part of the role
  • Mileage expenses can be claimed for travel from the Burgess Hill base school to other sites

About you:

  • Previous experience in caretaking, facilities, maintenance, or a similar practical role
  • Confident carrying out general repairs and basic maintenance tasks
  • Good understanding of site safety and security procedures
  • Reliable, organised, and able to manage a varied workload
  • Comfortable working independently and using initiative
  • Strong communication skills and a professional approach when dealing with staff, contractors, and visitors
  • Flexible attitude and willingness to support across multiple sites
  • Full UK driving licence is desirable
