About the Role

Engage Education are currently working in partnership with a welcoming primary school in East Leeds who are looking for a dedicated and resilient SEN Teaching Assistant to provide one-to-one support for pupils in Year 3 and Year 5.

The successful candidate will support children with Autism and additional behavioural needs, helping them to access learning, manage their emotions and develop positive relationships within the classroom.

This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting children with additional needs and can provide consistent, tailored support to help pupils overcome barriers to learning.

The school is looking for someone who is patient, proactive and confident supporting children who may display challenging behaviours, while maintaining a calm, positive and nurturing approach.

Your Responsibilities

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Provide dedicated one-to-one support to pupils in Year 3 and Year 5.
  • Support children with Autism and associated behavioural needs.
  • Help pupils access the curriculum and engage with classroom activities.
  • Implement appropriate behaviour management strategies to encourage positive behaviour.
  • Support pupils with emotional regulation, transitions and managing challenging situations.
  • Adapt activities and approaches to meet individual learning and behavioural needs.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils and encourage their confidence and independence.
  • Work closely with class teachers, the SENCO and wider support staff to ensure consistent support.
  • Follow individual support plans and agreed behaviour management strategies.
  • Encourage positive social interaction and inclusion within the classroom.
  • Provide feedback to teachers on pupil engagement, progress and any concerns.

What We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have previous experience supporting children with Special Educational Needs (SEN).
  • Ideally have experience working with children with Autism.
  • Be confident supporting pupils who display challenging behaviours.
  • Have an understanding of behaviour management and de-escalation strategies.
  • Be calm, patient, resilient and consistent in their approach.
  • Be able to build positive relationships while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
  • Understand the importance of adapting support to meet individual needs.
  • Be confident working on a one-to-one basis while collaborating with the wider school team.
  • Be reliable and committed to a long-term position.

Experience in a mainstream primary school, specialist provision or a similar SEN support setting would be highly beneficial.
