Start Date: ASAP

Are you an experienced SEMH Practitioner, Behaviour Support Specialist or Pastoral Professional with a strong background supporting primary-aged children with complex social, emotional and behavioural needs?

We are recruiting a highly experienced SEMH Behaviour & Inclusion Practitioner to join a specialist educational setting in Leeds, supporting primary-aged pupils who face significant barriers to learning due to their Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

We are looking for someone with the experience, confidence and professional judgement to take an active role in behaviour intervention, emotional regulation, individual support planning and helping vulnerable children successfully engage with education.

The successful candidate will understand the complexities behind challenging behaviour and have proven experience implementing strategies that support meaningful, long-term progress.

The Role

Working closely with teaching staff, school leaders, families and external professionals, you will provide specialist behavioural, emotional and learning support to primary-aged pupils with complex SEMH needs.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Behaviour Intervention: Developing and implementing individualised behaviour support strategies for pupils displaying significant emotional and behavioural difficulties.
  • Emotional Regulation: Supporting children to recognise, understand and manage their emotions through targeted interventions and therapeutic approaches.
  • Individual Support Plans: Contributing to the development, implementation and monitoring of personalised behaviour, pastoral and learning support plans.
  • Trauma-Informed Support: Recognising how trauma, attachment difficulties and disrupted emotional development can impact behaviour, relationships and learning.
  • De-escalation: Confidently managing challenging situations using positive behaviour support, restorative approaches and appropriate de-escalation techniques.
  • Relationship Building: Establishing consistent, trusting relationships with children who may struggle with emotional regulation, authority, boundaries or engagement.
  • Multi-Agency Working: Collaborating with teachers, SEND professionals, families and external agencies to provide a consistent approach to each child’s needs.
  • Inclusion & Reintegration: Supporting pupils to overcome barriers to learning and develop the emotional, social and behavioural skills needed to access education successfully.
  • Monitoring Progress: Maintaining accurate records, reviewing interventions and adapting support strategies according to individual pupil progress.

The role may also involve supporting outreach and reintegration programmes, working collaboratively with other educational settings and families to ensure consistency in behaviour support.

Who Are We Looking For?

We are specifically seeking an experienced practitioner who has previously worked with children displaying complex SEMH needs and significant behavioural challenges.

You must be confident working independently when appropriate, making informed decisions and supporting children who require a highly personalised approach.

Essential experience and skills:

  • Significant professional experience supporting children with SEMH needs, challenging behaviour, emotional dysregulation or additional behavioural needs.
  • A strong background in specialist SEMH education, Alternative Provision, PRUs, behaviour intervention or a closely related professional setting.
  • Experience developing, implementing or contributing to individual behaviour support plans and targeted interventions.
  • A sound understanding of trauma-informed practice, attachment difficulties and the impact of adverse childhood experiences.
  • Confidence managing behavioural incidents, including situations involving aggression, distress or heightened emotional responses.
  • Experience working collaboratively with teachers, parents, carers and other professionals.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving and relationship-building skills.
  • The emotional resilience, patience and professional confidence to work with children who may present significant challenges.

Highly desirable:

  • Previous experience supporting primary-aged pupils with complex SEMH needs.
  • Team Teach, PRICE, MAPA or equivalent positive behaviour intervention training.
  • Experience in a Behaviour Mentor, Pastoral Lead, Inclusion Practitioner, SEMH Support or Behaviour Intervention role.
  • Knowledge of restorative practice, emotional literacy interventions and therapeutic approaches to behaviour.
  • Experience supporting reintegration, outreach or transition programmes.
  • A relevant qualification in education, SEND, child development, psychology, youth work or therapeutic support.

What Makes This Role Different?

This position goes beyond providing classroom assistance.

You will play an important role in identifying the reasons behind challenging behaviour, implementing effective interventions and helping children develop the emotional and social skills they need to succeed.

We need someone who can confidently balance nurture with clear boundaries, recognise when a child requires additional intervention and work proactively to achieve positive outcomes.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced SEMH professional who wants to take on greater responsibility and use their expertise to make a genuine difference.

What We Offer

  • £130–£150 per day, dependent on relevant experience.
  • Full-time, long-term opportunity with an immediate start.
  • The opportunity to work within a specialist educational environment.
  • A rewarding position supporting primary-aged children with complex SEMH needs.
  • Ongoing support from a dedicated education recruitment consultant.
  • Opportunities for professional development and further experience in specialist behaviour intervention.
