Temporary Cover Supervisor Needed for Secondary School in Keighley

At Engage, we’re working with a supportive secondary school in Keighley to recruit a Temporary Cover Supervisor to join their team and support the continued learning and progress of their pupils.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about education and enjoys working with young people. Whether you are an experienced Cover Supervisor, an aspiring teacher, or have a background in youth work or behaviour support, this role could be an ideal opportunity to gain valuable experience within a secondary school environment.

About the role

As a Cover Supervisor, you will be responsible for leading lessons and supervising pupils in the absence of their usual class teacher, across a range of subjects.

The role involves delivering pre-prepared work, maintaining a positive learning environment and ensuring pupils remain focused and engaged with their work. There is minimal planning and marking, making this an excellent opportunity for candidates looking to gain classroom experience without the responsibilities of a full teaching role.

You will:

  • Supervise classes across a range of subjects
  • Deliver pre-prepared lesson materials and ensure pupils understand their tasks
  • Maintain a positive, purposeful and safe classroom environment
  • Manage behaviour effectively and consistently
  • Encourage pupils to remain focused, motivated and engaged with their learning
  • Follow school policies and procedures
  • Provide feedback to teaching staff where appropriate
  • Support pupils aged 11–16 with their learning and development
  • Adapt your approach to suit different classes, abilities and circumstances
  • Work collaboratively with teaching and support staff

The school is committed to providing a positive and engaging learning environment where pupils are encouraged to challenge themselves, develop their skills and reach their full potential.

About you

The successful Cover Supervisor will be confident, adaptable and able to take charge of a classroom while maintaining a positive relationship with pupils.

Key skills and requirements include:

  • Previous experience working with secondary-aged pupils (11–16)
  • Strong classroom and behaviour management skills
  • Confidence supervising classes independently
  • The ability to follow and deliver pre-prepared lesson plans
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to build positive rapport with pupils
  • A fun but firm approach to behaviour management
  • Patience, resilience and emotional maturity
  • The ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations
  • Flexibility to work across different subjects and year groups
  • Good organisation and time-management skills
  • A proactive and adaptable approach
  • A genuine interest in education and supporting young people’s development

Previous experience working with pupils with challenging behaviour, SEND or additional learning needs would be advantageous.

We welcome applications from candidates with varying levels of experience. This role could be particularly well suited to aspiring teachers, graduates, Teaching Assistants, Behaviour Mentors, Youth Workers or experienced Cover Supervisors looking to develop their education career.

What makes a successful Cover Supervisor?

The most successful candidates will be those who can command a classroom without being overly authoritative, building mutual respect while ensuring high standards of behaviour and learning.

You should be someone who:

  • Can confidently take control of a classroom
  • Is approachable while maintaining clear boundaries
  • Can think on their feet when circumstances change
  • Is consistent and fair when managing behaviour
  • Can quickly build relationships with unfamiliar groups of pupils
  • Remains calm under pressure
  • Is enthusiastic and brings positive energy into the classroom
  • Takes safeguarding and pupil wellbeing seriously
  • Is reliable, punctual and professional
  • Wants to make a positive difference to young people’s education
