Behaviour Support Worker Required for Secondary School in Bradford

About the role:

A supportive and inclusive secondary school in Bradford is seeking two full-time Behaviour Support Workers to join their dedicated pastoral and support team, with immediate starts available.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Behaviour Support Worker, Teaching Assistant, Learning Mentor or someone with relevant experience supporting young people who wants to make a genuine difference to pupils’ lives.

The successful candidates will work closely with pupils who may experience social, emotional and behavioural difficulties (SEMH), anxiety, ADHD, autism and other barriers to learning. You will play a key role in helping pupils manage their behaviour, regulate their emotions and engage positively with education.

Your Role:

• Providing 1:1 and small-group behaviour support to pupils
• Building positive, trusting relationships with pupils and acting as a consistent role model
• Supporting pupils to recognise and manage their emotions and behaviour
• Helping pupils develop strategies to regulate their behaviour and make positive choices
• Working alongside teachers, pastoral staff and the school’s wider support team to minimise disruption and maximise learning
• Supporting pupils who are struggling to engage with lessons or the wider school environment
• Responding calmly and appropriately to challenging behaviour and potentially difficult situations
• Reinforcing school expectations, boundaries and positive behaviour strategies
• Helping pupils develop confidence, resilience, independence and social skills
• Monitoring pupil progress and providing constructive feedback to teachers and relevant staff
• Encouraging pupils to take responsibility for their behaviour and understand the consequences of their choices
• Contributing to a safe, positive and inclusive school environment

The ideal candidate:

A successful Behaviour Support Worker understands that behaviour is often a form of communication. Rather than simply reacting to challenging behaviour, you will be able to remain calm, understand the underlying needs of the pupil and use positive strategies to help them make better choices.

The school will be looking for someone who is:

• Calm, patient and emotionally resilient, particularly when dealing with challenging situations
• Confident setting clear boundaries while maintaining positive relationships
• Empathetic and non-judgemental, with an ability to see situations from a young person’s perspective
• Excellent at building trust, rapport and positive relationships with pupils
• Consistent and fair in their approach to behaviour management
• Able to de-escalate situations and remain professional under pressure
• Proactive, adaptable and able to think on their feet
• A confident communicator who can work effectively with teachers, pastoral staff and parents/carers
• Positive and encouraging, with the ability to motivate pupils who may have lost confidence in their education
• Observant and able to identify changes in a pupil’s behaviour, mood or emotional wellbeing
• Reliable, organised and committed to maintaining high standards
• Passionate about helping young people overcome barriers and reach their full potential
• Committed to safeguarding, inclusion and the wellbeing of pupils

Previous experience working with young people with behavioural, emotional or additional needs is highly desirable. Experience in education, youth work, social care, mentoring, residential care or similar environments would also be valuable.
