How Many Weeks in a School Year: Comparing Term Dates in Canada & Abroad

Canadians coming to the UK to teach will enjoy a very similar academic year to their experience at home. The UK school year runs from the beginning of September and concludes in July, when students and teachers enjoy a 6 week break before the new year starts again.

With a similar 2 weeks at Christmas and 2 weeks around Easter to their Canadian counterparts, it’s another great reason why Canadian teachers find teaching in England attractive – holidays fitting in around friends and family makes being away from home much easier!

UK Term Dates

There are three terms, each term is 13 weeks. Each term is split into two halves, with six weeks in school and a half-term break of a week.

The dates for 2020/2021 are below, although it’s worth noting that all schools are allocated 5 inset days which they may add to the beginning or end of term to extend the break, making individual school term dates variable.
