Promoting wellbeing in the classroom: World Wellbeing Week

Supporting student wellbeing is essential for fostering a positive learning environment and promoting overall development. While World Wellbeing Week in June highlights the importance of mental and physical health, prioritising wellbeing shouldn’t be limited to just one week.

World Wellbeing Week

World Wellbeing Week, 24th-30th June 2025, is dedicated to celebrating and raising awareness about the importance of physical, mental and emotional health. It’s an opportunity for everyone to reflect on their wellbeing while also supporting those around them. For teachers, it’s the ideal time to equip students with valuable tools and strategies to manage their mental health and foster lasting wellbeing skills. Explore these practical tools and activities to use in your classroom this World Wellbeing Week.

This blog explores four effective strategies to help you raise awareness in the classroom during World Wellbeing Week and provide ongoing support to your students year-round.

Wellbeing check-ins

Begin each day with a wellbeing check-in to create a supportive classroom atmosphere. Use tools like mood meters or emotion wheels to help students identify and articulate how they’re feeling. Encourage open sharing or provide personal journals where they can write down their emotions privately. This simple yet impactful activity not only fosters emotional awareness but also helps students feel seen, heard and valued, creating a foundation for meaningful conversations and deeper connections in the classroom.

Gratitude wall

Creating a ‘Gratitude Wall’ in the classroom is a simple yet effective way to encourage students to focus on positive experiences. Invite them to write down something they’re thankful for each day, gradually filling the wall with messages of gratitude. You can also incorporate positive affirmations, prompting students to share encouraging notes with themselves and their peers, fostering a supportive and uplifting classroom atmosphere.

Physical movement and relaxation

Physical activity plays a crucial role in maintaining students’ mental wellbeing. Introducing short movement breaks throughout the day, like stretching, yoga or a brisk walk around the school grounds or playground, can help alleviate tension and boost focus. Additionally, incorporating breathing exercises can be an effective way to reduce stress and anxiety. These practices not only support immediate wellbeing but also teach students valuable self-care techniques they can use beyond the classroom.

Wellbeing plan

Encourage students to keep practising the strategies they learned during World Wellbeing Week by helping them develop a personalised ‘Wellbeing Plan.’ Work with them to outline daily or weekly activities, such as breathing exercises, positive affirmations or gratitude journaling, that they can incorporate into their routine to maintain a balanced and positive mindset. Additionally, consider revisiting these strategies regularly to reinforce their importance and help students stay committed to their wellbeing goals.

By incorporating these activities into World Wellbeing Week, teachers can create a more supportive, inclusive and mentally healthy classroom environment, one that prioritises student wellbeing all year round.
