Do your pupils need a little extra support this exam season?

Exam season is approaching fast, and for some pupils, they’ll be needing some extra support. It’s important to understand that not all pupils learn at the same pace, and revising can be astronomically harder for some in comparison to others. Other factors such as your home environment, learning style, and attention span can all come into play when prepping for exams.

Now is the best time to start thinking about a tutor who can provide help during the run-up to end-of-year SATs and GCSE exams.

At this time of year, you’re going to have a good idea of the stage that your pupils are currently at. Mock exam results, attendance, and general morale will give you a great indication of the technical ability that pupils have as well as their confidence. It’s also important to sit down with students individually where possible to get a comprehensive understanding of whether they’d benefit from a tutor and what that would look like.

Other things to consider…

  • Providing fair tutoring: Of course, your core focus is going to be for primarily pupils who are struggling to get ‘pass’ grades. However, you also want to ensure that you’re providing support to students who may have had inconsistent results during mock exams (even if you’re sure that they will do well in the official exam). Confidence plays a huge part in someone’s ability, so take this into consideration when distributing tutoring time amongst the class.
  • Consult parents and guardians: It’s crucial to keep parents in the loop with their child’s progress, especially if you get the impression that their child doesn’t communicate with them at home. Set up time with parents and discuss tutoring options to keep parents informed.
  • Be mindful of toxic home environments: Contrary to the previous point, understand that some pupils don’t have great home lives and prefer to keep their grades and progress a secret. This is why it’s important to have strong relationships with pupils first and understand their home dynamics as best possible before parental involvement is needed.
  • Morale vs technical skill: As mentioned, tutoring is about confidence as much as it is about technical skill. Assess what pupils need and also ascertain what you can provide them with, so a tutor’s time is used fairly and also effectively.
