Are you passionate about supporting children and young people with Autism and Special Educational Needs (SEN)?

Do you have experience working with Autism, SLD or PMLD and want to make a genuine difference to the lives of young people?

Engage Education is looking for compassionate, patient and dedicated Autism Learning Support Assistants to join our network of specialist SEN schools.

About the role

As an Autism Learning Support Assistant, you will work closely with teachers, therapists and other support staff to provide high-quality, individualised support to pupils with a range of additional needs.

You will help create a safe, engaging and supportive environment where every student is encouraged to develop their communication, independence, confidence and learning skills.

The role may involve supporting pupils with:

  • Autism
  • Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD)
  • Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD)
  • Complex communication needs
  • Challenging behaviour
  • Personal care and mobility needs

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with additional needs.
  • Support teachers in delivering personalised learning activities.
  • Use communication strategies and aids such as Makaton and PECS where appropriate.
  • Encourage pupils to develop their communication, social and independence skills.
  • Support classroom activities and adapt tasks to meet individual needs.
  • Provide personal care, including feeding, toileting and mobility support, where required.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils and staff.
  • Support pupils who may display challenging or distressed behaviour using appropriate strategies.
  • Monitor and communicate pupils’ progress and wellbeing.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists and families to provide consistent support.

What we’re looking for

We are keen to hear from candidates who have:

  • Previous experience working with children or young people with Autism/SEN.
  • A patient, calm and compassionate approach.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to build positive relationships with pupils.
  • A willingness to support with personal care where required.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a wider school team.
  • A genuine passion for helping young people reach their full potential.

Experience with Makaton, PECS, SLD, PMLD or challenging behaviour is desirable but not essential.
