Cover Supervisor – Secondary School

At Engage Education, we are working with a welcoming and ambitious secondary school in Bradford to recruit a Cover Supervisor for a long-term position starting in September.

About the Role

As a Cover Supervisor, you will play an important role in maintaining continuity of learning when teachers are absent. You will supervise classes across a range of subjects, ensuring students complete pre-planned work and that the classroom remains calm, purposeful and focused.

You will need to be confident managing behaviour and able to establish positive relationships with students quickly. The role would suit someone who is personable, adaptable and enjoys working with young people.

You do not need previous experience as a Cover Supervisor, and applications are welcomed from graduates and candidates with experience working with young people in other settings, including youth work, support work, mentoring, coaching or similar roles.

Your Role as a Cover Supervisor

As a Cover Supervisor, your main responsibility will be to supervise students and ensure that learning continues effectively in the absence of teaching staff.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Supervising classes and ensuring students complete the work provided by the class teacher.
• Managing behaviour effectively and maintaining a positive learning environment.
• Establishing clear expectations and maintaining the school’s high standards of behaviour.
• Supporting students with questions and helping them to remain engaged with their work.
• Following the school’s behaviour, safeguarding and wider policies and procedures.
• Collecting completed work and ensuring it is returned to the relevant teacher or department.
• Providing appropriate feedback to teaching staff about the lesson and student engagement.
• Working collaboratively with teachers and support staff to ensure students receive consistent support.
• Building positive, professional relationships with students while maintaining appropriate boundaries.

Essential Skills and Experience

To be successful as a Cover Supervisor, you will need:

• A degree or equivalent qualification.
• Experience working with young people, whether in education, youth work, support work, coaching, mentoring or a similar environment.
• Strong behaviour management skills and the confidence to manage challenging behaviour calmly and consistently.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to give clear instructions and build rapport with students.
• Confidence and presence to take responsibility for a classroom and maintain authority without being overly confrontational.
• Patience, resilience and empathy when supporting students with different needs and behaviours.
• Reliability and punctuality, with a professional approach to attendance and responsibilities.
• A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
• The ability to work effectively as part of a wider school team.

Desirable Skills and Experience

The following would be advantageous, although they are not essential:

• Previous experience working as a Cover Supervisor, Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant or similar.
• Experience within a secondary school environment.
• Experience supporting students with additional needs or challenging behaviour.
• A recognised teaching, education, youth work or childcare qualification.
• Experience delivering mentoring, coaching or enrichment activities to young people.
• Knowledge of effective behaviour management strategies.
• An understanding of the secondary school curriculum.

• Is organised and reliable: You are punctual, prepared and committed to ensuring every lesson runs as smoothly as possible.
• Has high expectations: You believe in students’ potential and are committed to encouraging them to achieve their best.
