Science Teacher Required for Secondary School in Leeds

Are you a qualified Science Teacher looking for your next opportunity? Whether you’re an experienced teacher or an ECT, this maternity cover position could be the ideal next step for you.

We are working with a welcoming and inclusive secondary school in the Leeds area, which is seeking a passionate Science Teacher to join its team on a full-time maternity cover basis.

About the role

The successful applicant will be joining a well-established Science department within a large, modern and well-resourced secondary school. The school is home to around 1,400 pupils aged 11–16 and has a strong sense of community, with its values of care, commitment and community underpinning school life.

The Science department is passionate about developing students’ scientific literacy and encouraging them to explore new ideas through practical experiences and investigations across Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The department has extensive equipment and resources to support learning from Key Stage 3 through to GCSE. At Key Stage 4, students follow Edexcel Combined Science, with opportunities to study separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

This is a full-time maternity cover role for a qualified teacher who can fully commit to joining a school with a clear vision, strong ethos and ambitious curriculum.

Your role

As a Science Teacher, you will:

  • Plan and deliver engaging and challenging Science lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4
  • Deliver high-quality theory and practical lessons across Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics
  • Inspire students to develop curiosity, scientific literacy and a genuine interest in the subject
  • Differentiate lessons effectively to meet the needs of students with a wide range of abilities
  • Create a positive classroom environment where students feel confident to participate, ask questions and learn from mistakes
  • Assess students’ knowledge and understanding and use assessment to inform future teaching
  • Ensure students develop the knowledge and practical skills required for successful progression through the Science curriculum
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues within the Science department to ensure consistency and high standards
  • Support the school’s inclusive approach, including adapting teaching to meet the needs of pupils with SEND
  • Contribute to the wider life of the school and maintain high expectations for behaviour, effort and achievement
  • Follow school policies and contribute to a safe, respectful and purposeful learning environment

The ideal candidate

The successful Science Teacher will be:

  • A qualified teacher with QTS or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification; ECTs will be considered
  • Confident teaching Science at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4
  • Able to deliver engaging practical and theoretical Science lessons
  • Passionate about Science and committed to developing students’ knowledge, confidence and curiosity
  • A strong classroom practitioner who can establish positive relationships and maintain high expectations
  • Able to adapt teaching and resources to support students of different abilities and needs
  • Organised, reliable and able to take ownership of planning, assessment and classroom routines
  • Confident working collaboratively as part of a department and wider school team
  • Resilient, adaptable and able to settle quickly into an established school environment
  • Committed to safeguarding, inclusion and the personal development of young people
  • Enthusiastic about contributing to a school community built around care, commitment and community

The school environment

The school is a large, mixed 11–16 secondary academy serving the local Leeds community. It has a strong community identity and describes itself as a transformational place of learning, with “Excellence, Transformation, Community” at the heart of its ethos. Its three core values — Care, Commitment and Community — sit alongside the expectations to Be Ready, Be Respectful and Be Safe.

The school’s October 2024 Ofsted inspection found it to be a happy and inclusive school, with strong relationships between pupils and staff. Inspectors described the environment as calm and orderly, noting that pupils typically behave well, show respect to teachers, collaborate effectively and are motivated and interested in their learning. Ofsted also highlighted the school’s ambitious curriculum and noted that changes to the curriculum were contributing to improvements in pupils’ achievement.

Ofsted also recognised that teachers are skilled at delivering the curriculum in their subjects. The school has continued to develop its curriculum with a focus on identifying the important knowledge pupils need and sequencing this effectively. There is a clear expectation that teachers ensure pupils develop secure knowledge and understanding as they progress through increasingly complex concepts.

The Science department itself places considerable emphasis on practical learning and investigation, with the school stating that all students should have the opportunity to engage with new ideas and explore what interests them. Its curriculum covers Biology, Chemistry and Physics and is designed to build the knowledge and skills needed for progression from Key Stage 3 into GCSE study.

The school also has a strong commitment to inclusion. Ofsted praised its approach to supporting pupils with SEND, while the school’s curriculum and wider support structures are designed to enable pupils with additional needs to access an ambitious education.

Staff also benefit from a modern, heavily resourced learning environment. The academy has invested in substantial facilities, including a £30 million building and a major expansion, creating a bright and flexible environment designed to support contemporary teaching and learning.
