Are you a dedicated and compassionate teacher with a passion for supporting Post-16 learners with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)?
We are seeking an inspiring and committed Post-16 Teacher to join a supportive and forward-thinking special needs setting. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference to young adults with complex learning needs, preparing them for adulthood through personalised education, life skills, and meaningful learning experiences.
The school are committed to providing an inclusive and nurturing environment for learners aged 16–19 (or up to 25 where appropriate) with a range of learning difficulties and disabilities. Our curriculum focuses on developing independence, communication, employability, community participation, and preparing learners for their next steps.
The Role
As a Post-16 Teacher, you will lead a small, well-supported class, delivering engaging and highly personalised learning programmes that develop independence, functional skills, communication, and preparation for adulthood. Working closely with teaching assistants, therapists, families, and external agencies, you will ensure every learner receives the support they need to achieve their individual goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver Personalised Learning: Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated lessons tailored to individual EHCP outcomes, focusing on functional skills, independence, and preparation for adulthood.
- Preparation for Adulthood: Support learners to develop independent living skills, employability, community access, travel training, and personal development.
- Promote Communication: Use a range of communication strategies, including Makaton, PECS, AAC, and assistive technology, to maximise learner engagement.
- Collaborate with Specialists: Work alongside therapists, support staff, employers, and external professionals to provide holistic support for learners.
- EHCP Management: Contribute to annual reviews and monitor progress against EHCP outcomes, ensuring targets remain meaningful and aspirational.
- Create an Inclusive Environment: Foster a safe, supportive, and positive learning environment that promotes confidence, wellbeing, and independence.
- Monitor Progress: Assess and celebrate learner achievements, adapting teaching to ensure continued progress towards individual outcomes.
- Build Positive Partnerships: Maintain strong communication with parents, carers, and external agencies to support learners’ ongoing development and transition into adulthood.
What We’re Looking For
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A recognised teaching qualification (QTS, QTLS, or equivalent).
- Experience teaching learners with SEND, ideally within a Post-16, FE, or specialist setting.
- A strong understanding of Preparation for Adulthood pathways, functional skills, and person-centred planning.
- A compassionate, adaptable, and learner-centred approach to teaching.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills to work effectively with colleagues, families, and external professionals.
- Knowledge of alternative communication methods and assistive technologies.
- A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people with additional needs.
