Secondary SEND Teacher
Location: Hertfordshire
Type: Long Term to Perm, Full Time
Working Hours: 08:30 am – 16:00 pm
Salary: MPS / UPS + SEN Allowance
Are you a dedicated and compassionate educator with a passion for supporting young people with special educational needs? We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Secondary SEND Teacher to join a specialist school supporting students across Key Stages 3 and 4.
This is a rewarding opportunity to make a genuine difference in the lives of young people with a range of learning, communication, and social-emotional needs. You will play a key role in delivering personalised learning programmes that help students develop academically, socially, emotionally, and independently, preparing them for successful futures.
Key Responsibilities
Plan and Deliver Personalised Learning
Design and deliver engaging, differentiated lessons that meet the diverse learning needs of students with SEND, ensuring access to a broad and balanced curriculum.
Promote Academic, Social and Emotional Development
Support students in developing essential skills, confidence, communication, and self-esteem whilst encouraging positive engagement in learning.
Develop and Review Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
Work collaboratively with teaching assistants, families, therapists, and external professionals to set, monitor, and review personalised learning targets.
Prepare Students for Adulthood
Embed life skills, independence, employability, and functional learning opportunities into teaching, helping students prepare for further education, training, employment, and adult life.
Monitor and Assess Progress
Track student achievement through ongoing assessment, adapting teaching strategies and interventions to maximise progress and engagement.
Foster a Positive and Inclusive Learning Environment
Create a safe, structured, and supportive classroom culture where students feel valued, respected, and empowered to succeed.
Work as Part of a Multi-Disciplinary Team
Collaborate closely with colleagues, therapists, pastoral staff, and families to ensure a holistic approach to each student’s development and wellbeing.
Qualifications and Skills Required
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent teaching qualification. (Preferred not required)
- Experience teaching students with SEND, either within a specialist setting or mainstream environment.
- Strong understanding of adapting the secondary curriculum to meet a wide range of learning needs.
- Experience supporting students with needs such as Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD), Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN), and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Creativity, patience, resilience, and a flexible approach to teaching.
- Knowledge of alternative communication strategies, assistive technology, or interventions that support SEND learners would be advantageous.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
