Are you an experienced SEMH Teaching Assistant looking for your next full-time opportunity in a supportive and ambitious secondary school?

Its dedicated SEND department works collaboratively with teachers, families and external professionals to provide personalised support that enables students with additional needs to thrive. The school has a strong focus on inclusion, resilience and removing barriers to learning for all pupils.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced SEMH Teaching Assistant who is confident supporting students with social, emotional and mental health needs, challenging behaviour and additional learning needs within a mainstream secondary setting.
Please note: We are only looking to hear from candidates who are available for full-time work (Monday to Friday). Part-time availability cannot be considered for this position.
The Role
- Provide tailored 1:1 and small group support for students with SEMH needs, helping them access learning and achieve positive outcomes.
- Build positive, trusting relationships that promote emotional wellbeing, confidence and engagement.
- Work closely with classroom teachers to adapt learning activities and provide targeted interventions.
- Support students in managing their emotions using consistent behaviour management strategies and restorative approaches.
- Encourage positive social interactions and develop students’ independence and resilience.
- Liaise effectively with the SEND team, pastoral staff, parents and external agencies to monitor progress and implement support plans.
- Promote safeguarding and maintain a safe, supportive learning environment at all times.
Essential Requirements
- Previous experience supporting children or young people with SEMH needs, challenging behaviour or additional learning needs.
- Experience working as a Teaching Assistant, Behaviour Mentor, Learning Support Assistant or within a similar role.
- Strong behaviour management skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- A resilient, patient and empathetic approach.
- The ability to work proactively as part of a wider SEND and pastoral team.
- A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable young people to succeed.
- Availability to work full-time, Monday to Friday.
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Experience working within a secondary school setting.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed practice, restorative approaches or de-escalation techniques.
- Experience supporting students with ADHD, Autism, attachment needs or other additional needs alongside SEMH.
- Team Teach or other positive handling training (desirable but not essential).
- Relevant Teaching Assistant or child development qualifications.
