About the School

We are working with a well-established specialist school in East Leeds that provides high-quality education and support for pupils aged 2–19 with a wide range of additional needs. The school supports children and young people with severe learning difficulties, complex medical needs, physical disabilities, Down’s Syndrome, autism, and hearing and visual impairments.

The Role

As a Complex Needs Teaching Assistant, you will work alongside teachers, therapists, and support staff to provide tailored support that enables pupils to access learning, build independence, and thrive both academically and socially.

No two days are the same. You’ll support pupils with a variety of communication, sensory, physical, and behavioural needs, adapting your approach to ensure every learner feels safe, valued, and engaged.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide one-to-one and small group support for pupils with autism and complex learning needs.
• Support pupils with communication, sensory, emotional, and behavioural needs using positive, consistent strategies.
• Help create a calm, structured, and inclusive learning environment.
• Assist with personal care when required, ensuring dignity and respect at all times.
• Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and wider school staff to deliver personalised support.
• Adapt learning activities and strategies to meet individual Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) outcomes.
• Encourage independence, confidence, and active participation in school life.
• Build positive relationships that promote emotional wellbeing and personal development.

About You

We’re looking for someone who is compassionate, resilient, and passionate about supporting children and young people with additional needs.

You will ideally have:

• Lived or professional experience supporting individuals with autism or complex learning needs.
• Experience in education, care, support work, youth work, or a similar setting with children or adults.
• Confidence in managing behaviours that challenge with a calm, patient, and positive approach.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• A nurturing, adaptable, and empathetic nature.
• Reliability, emotional resilience, and a genuine commitment to helping every learner succeed.
• A willingness to support pupils across the full 2–19 age range.
