School Caretaker – Burgess Hill

Full-Time | September 2026 Start

Engage Education is recruiting a full-time School Caretaker to support a group of schools in the Burgess Hill area. This is an excellent opportunity for a dependable and practical individual to take responsibility for maintaining safe, secure, and effective learning environments across multiple school sites.

The successful candidate will be based primarily at the Burgess Hill site, supporting the daily running of the premises, while also providing assistance at other nearby schools when required.

About the role:

  • Managing the daily upkeep, maintenance, and security of the school premises
  • Carrying out site checks, opening and closing duties, and ensuring buildings are secure
  • Completing general repairs and maintenance tasks across the school environment
  • Supporting compliance with health and safety requirements
  • Liaising with contractors and external providers attending site
  • Maintaining outdoor areas, buildings, equipment, and facilities
  • Preparing classrooms and shared spaces for lessons, meetings, and events
  • Assisting with deliveries, furniture moves, and general site operations
  • Identifying and reporting maintenance issues promptly
  • Providing support across other school locations within the wider organisation when required

Working pattern:

  • Full-time position
  • Split shifts will be required when working at the Burgess Hill base school
  • Working hours at other school sites will follow non-split shift patterns
  • Travel between school locations may be required
  • Mileage can be claimed for travel from the Burgess Hill base school to other sites

About you:

  • Previous experience in caretaking, premises, maintenance, or facilities is desirable
  • Confident completing practical maintenance tasks and minor repairs
  • Understanding of health and safety and site security procedures
  • Reliable, flexible, and able to prioritise a varied workload
  • Comfortable working independently and taking initiative
  • Good communication skills and a professional approach
  • Willingness to support different school environments and teams
  • Full UK driving licence is desirable
