Can school staff get a blue light card?

From keeping classrooms in order to managing the day-to-day running of a busy school, school staff play a vital role in shaping students’ lives. Whether you’re in the classroom, the office or behind the scenes, your work helps keep everything moving – even if it often goes unrecognised.

But when it comes to benefits like the Blue Light Card, which offers discounts at hundreds of retailers and services, many school staff are left wondering, “Am I eligible?”

This blog explains exactly who qualifies for a Blue Light Card, how school staff may be included and how you can apply if you’re eligible. If you work in a school and enjoy a good deal, this guide is for you!

What is a Blue Light Card?

The Blue Light Card is a UK discount scheme that offers exclusive savings both online and in-store for those working in the public sector. This includes professionals across the NHS, emergency services, armed forces, social care and education.

To support the Blue Light community, the scheme partners with a wide range of businesses from small local shops to major national retailers, all offering special discounts to cardholders as a thank you for the vital work they do.

Are school staff eligible for a Blue Light Card?

Not sure if you’re eligible for a Blue Light Card? You’re not alone – it can be a little confusing. While the full list is available on the Blue Light Card website, we’ve rounded up the key info for educators right here!

When it comes to education, many school-based roles do qualify. This includes staff working in:

  • State early years and primary schools
  • State secondary schools and sixth form colleges
  • Special schools, referral units and centrally employed staff
  • Vocational institutions, specialised education and training facilities
  • Centrally managed employment programmes

Unfortunately, university staff and retired educators don’t fall under the current eligibility criteria.
