How can I make my teaching CV & personal statement stand out?

While teaching is a deeply rewarding career, the market for the best UK teaching jobs is incredibly competitive. Whether you are a veteran educator, a recent graduate looking for your first ECT (Early Career Teacher) role, or an international teacher relocating to the UK, your CV is your most powerful tool. It is your first, and sometimes only, chance to prove you belong in the classroom.

At Engage Education, we specialise in supporting educators at every stage of their journey. From those just beginning their Teacher Training to experienced professionals landing leadership roles, we know exactly what Headteachers are looking for.

Read on to learn how to optimise your teaching CV to beat the competition and secure your dream role.

1. How can I write a winning personal statement?

Your personal statement (or opening profile) is your digital handshake. In a sea of applications, this is your 30-second window to prove you’re the right fit for the school. To make it stand out:

  • Be specific: Don’t just say you are “passionate.” Explain what you bring to the classroom, such as “proven experience in improving literacy rates” or “specialism in SEND support.”
  • Tailor it: A generic CV is a discarded CV. Adjust your personal statement for every school to show you’ve researched their specific values and OFSTED report.
  • Show personality: Schools hire people, not just degrees. Let your enthusiasm for student development shine through.

2. Go beyond grades in your education history

While listing your GCSEs, A-Levels, and Degree is essential, don’t stop at the grades. To stand out, you need to show the practical application of your learning.

  • Deep-dive placements: If you are a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) or trainee, go into detail about the schools where you trained. Your placement history is more important than your degree title.
  • Reflect on growth: Headteachers value a reflective practitioner. Instead of just listing modules, mention a specific teaching practice or educational theory that shaped your classroom approach.

3. How can I prove my impact on a teaching CV?

Schools don’t just want to know what you were responsible for; they want to see the measurable impact you had on your pupils and your school.

  • Instead of: “I taught Year 6 Maths.”
  • Try: “Implemented a new Maths mastery approach which resulted in a 15% increase in SATs ‘Expected Standard’ results.”
  • Professional development: Include any workshops, safeguarding training (DSL), or curriculum planning sessions you’ve attended. It proves you are committed to Continuous Professional Development (CPD).

4. How should I structure my CV based on my teaching experience?

A “one-size-fits-all” layout doesn’t work in education. A Headteacher looking for a Subject Lead has very different priorities than one hiring an ECT (Early Careers Teacher). Your CV structure should pivot to reflect your career stage:

Experienced teachers

Focus on leadership roles (Head of Year, Subject Lead) and use recent references who have observed your teaching within the last 12 months. If you have a career gap, be transparent, whether you were travelling or focusing on family; honesty builds trust.

Career changers & graduates

If you lack classroom experience, lean heavily on your transferable skills. Highlight coaching, mentoring, or any role where you managed groups of people. Our Teaching Assistant Programme (ETAP) is also a fantastic way to bridge this gap. Find out more about ETAP here!

5. Showcase your personality

Schools aren’t just buildings; they are vibrant communities. Headteachers aren’t just looking for someone who can deliver a lesson; they are looking for a colleague who will enrich the staff room and the playground. Including a ‘Hobbies and Interests’ section is your chance to show your “whole-school” value.

Highlight your extracurricular potential. Use this section to prove you can add value beyond the curriculum. Can you lead a coding club, coach the school football team, or start a wellbeing choir? Mentioning these specific skills makes you a “double-threat” candidate.

Relocating from overseas to teach

Are you a qualified teacher living overseas? You don’t have to navigate the UK school system alone. We provide the support you need to transition your skills into a UK classroom seamlessly.
