SEND Year 9 Nurture Teacher – SEMH School
Location: Croydon
Type: Long term
Working Hours: 8:00 am – 15:30 pm.
Salary: M1 – UPS3
Are you a dedicated and compassionate educator with a passion for supporting students with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs? We are seeking a skilled SEND Year 9 Nurture Teacher to work within a specialist SEMH school in Croydon, delivering tailored education and providing a nurturing, structured learning environment that empowers students to achieve their full potential.
This is a rewarding opportunity to inspire and support Year 9 students who may have experienced barriers to education, helping them rebuild confidence, develop emotional resilience, and re-engage with learning in a school environment that values inclusion, positive relationships, and holistic development.
At the school, they are dedicated to providing a supportive, inclusive, and therapeutic learning environment for students with SEMH needs. The school is a place where every student is valued, nurtured, and encouraged to achieve their best—academically, socially, and emotionally. With a strong focus on nurture-based approaches, emotional regulation, and positive behaviour support, the school aims to help students develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed.
Key Responsibilities
● Plan and Deliver Tailored Lessons: Create engaging and differentiated lessons across the Year 9 curriculum, adapting teaching approaches to meet the individual academic, social, and emotional needs of students with SEMH challenges.
● Support Academic and Personal Growth: Develop students’ knowledge, confidence, emotional resilience, and social skills, helping them overcome barriers to learning and achieve their potential.
● Develop and Review Individual Education Plans (IEPs): Work closely with teaching assistants, parents, SENCOs, and external professionals to establish and review personalised learning and behavioural targets.
● Prepare Students for the Future: Support Year 9 students in developing independence, emotional regulation, positive relationships, and essential life skills while preparing them for the transition into Key Stage 4.
● Monitor and Assess Progress: Regularly track academic, behavioural, and emotional development, adapting teaching strategies to ensure students continue to make meaningful progress.
● Create a Safe Learning Environment: Establish a calm, structured, and nurturing classroom environment where students feel safe, supported, and motivated to engage in learning, using trauma-informed and restorative approaches.
● Collaborate Effectively: Work closely with teaching assistants, pastoral teams, therapists, and other professionals to provide consistent and holistic support for students with complex SEMH needs.
Qualifications and Skills Required
● Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent teaching qualification.
● Experience teaching students with SEMH needs, ideally within a specialist SEND school, alternative provision, or nurture-based setting (desirable).
● A solid understanding of the Key Stage 3 curriculum, particularly Year 9, and the ability to adapt lessons for students with varying academic abilities and emotional needs.
● Knowledge and experience of supporting students with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) challenges, including emotional dysregulation, behavioural difficulties, trauma, ADHD, and autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trusting, positive relationships with students who may struggle to engage in mainstream education.
● Creativity, patience, resilience, and strong behaviour management skills, with an understanding of trauma-informed practice, de-escalation techniques, and positive behaviour support.
● Familiarity with nurture principles, restorative approaches, and strategies to support emotional regulation is an advantage.
● A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all students.
What Makes a Successful Year 9 SEND Nurture Teacher?
● Empathy and Understanding: A deep commitment to understanding the emotional, social, and behavioural needs of students with SEMH challenges, recognising that behaviour is often a form of communication.
● Adaptability: The ability to tailor teaching methods, classroom routines, and learning resources to support students with complex needs while maintaining a calm and consistent approach.
● Collaboration: A proactive approach to working alongside teaching assistants, pastoral staff, families, and external professionals to provide consistent support.
● Passion for Inclusion: A strong belief that every young person deserves access to quality education, regardless of the challenges they may face, and a dedication to creating a nurturing and supportive classroom culture.
● Vision and Drive: A commitment to helping Year 9 students develop emotional resilience, confidence, independence, and the academic foundations needed to progress successfully into Key Stage 4.
