PMLD Learning Support Assistant

The role
As a PMLD Learning Support Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting pupils with complex and additional needs to develop their independence, communication and life skills.
You’ll work as part of a supportive SEN school team, helping pupils with PMLD, complex learning difficulties, physical disabilities and associated medical needs to access learning and enjoy a positive school experience.
Your responsibilities
Providing individualised support: Work closely with teachers, therapists and other professionals to provide tailored support based on each pupil’s individual needs and abilities.
Supporting communication: Use a range of communication methods and aids, such as Makaton, PECS, symbols and communication devices, to help pupils express themselves and develop their confidence.
Encouraging independence: Support pupils with developing essential life skills and encourage them to be as independent as possible within school and everyday activities.
Supporting personal care: Provide compassionate and respectful support with personal care, including feeding, toileting, changing and mobility, where required.
Assisting with mobility: Support pupils with physical needs and mobility, including safe moving and handling procedures and the use of specialist equipment where appropriate.
Supporting learning and sensory activities: Help deliver engaging, sensory and practical activities that are adapted to each pupil’s individual needs.
Working with professionals: Work closely with teachers, therapists and other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure pupils receive consistent and effective support.
Building positive relationships: Develop trusting relationships with pupils, creating a calm, safe and nurturing environment where they feel supported and valued.
Monitoring progress: Observe pupils’ development and progress and share relevant information with teachers and other professionals.
What we’re looking for
- Previous experience supporting children or young people with PMLD, complex needs, physical disabilities or additional needs is desirable
- A patient, caring and nurturing approach
- Comfortable supporting pupils with personal care and mobility
- Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team
- A genuine passion for helping children and young people achieve their potential
- A willingness to learn and develop your SEN knowledge
- An enhanced DBS on the Update Service is desirable, but full assistance can be provided
