Learning Support Assistant – Bradford
At Engage, we know that a school runs on quality support staff. We’re currently looking to recruit a Learning Support Assistant to join a welcoming and high-achieving secondary school in Bradford. This is a full-time, ongoing opportunity, with the successful candidate likely to provide 1-to-1 support for pupils with additional needs.
Previous experience supporting pupils with SEN/SEND is highly desirable, although we would also consider candidates with relevant experience working with children, young people or vulnerable individuals who can demonstrate the right skills and attitude.
About the role:
- Full-time, ongoing position
- Supporting pupils across the secondary age range
- Providing 1-to-1 support for students with additional learning needs
- Supporting pupils to access the curriculum and participate fully in lessons
- Working with students who may require additional support with communication, learning, social development or classroom engagement
- Providing small-group and intervention support where required
- Working closely with teachers, the SEND team and other support staff
- Helping pupils develop independence, confidence and positive learning habits
- Adapting resources and approaches to meet individual pupils’ needs
- Supporting students with their organisation, concentration and engagement
- Helping maintain a positive, safe and inclusive learning environment
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to develop a career in education, SEND or pastoral support. The role would particularly suit an experienced Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, SEN Teaching Assistant, Behaviour Support Worker, Youth Worker or someone with relevant care/support experience.
The ideal candidate:
The successful Learning Support Assistant will be:
- Patient, empathetic and nurturing, with a genuine desire to help young people succeed
- Experienced in supporting children or young people with SEN/SEND — highly desirable
- Confident providing 1-to-1 support and building positive relationships with pupils
- Able to adapt their communication and support style to meet individual needs
- Calm, consistent and resilient when supporting pupils who may find learning challenging
- Proactive and able to identify when a pupil needs additional encouragement or intervention
- Able to work effectively alongside teachers and the wider SEND/support team
- Organised and reliable, with good attention to detail
- Committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people
- Positive and professional, with high expectations for every pupil
- Passionate about helping students develop their confidence, independence and academic potential
SEN experience would be particularly advantageous, including experience supporting pupils with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, speech and language needs, social and communication difficulties or other learning needs.
About the school:
You will be joining a high-performing secondary academy in Bradford that provides education for boys aged 11–19. The school is part of a large multi-academy trust and has a strong academic and inclusive ethos. Ofsted rated the school Outstanding across all four areas inspected in February 2024: quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management.
Ofsted describes the school as inclusive to all pupils, with pupils achieving extremely well. The school places a strong emphasis on service, teamwork, ambition and respect, while pupils are described as well mannered, diligent, happy, safe and proud of their school.
For a Learning Support Assistant, the school’s approach to SEND is particularly relevant. Ofsted highlighted that pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities benefit particularly from the school’s inclusive and ambitious approach. The school provides additional support where pupils require it, including targeted support to help pupils catch up with reading.
The school also has high expectations for behaviour and conduct. Ofsted reported that pupils demonstrate excellent behaviour throughout the school and that staff are highly committed to making a difference to pupils. Staff also benefit from professional development and support around workload and wellbeing.
This is therefore an excellent environment for a Learning Support Assistant who wants to work in a school where inclusion, high expectations and pupil achievement are genuinely prioritised.
