We are currently recruiting a Communication Support Worker to join a specialist secondary school supporting deaf and hearing-impaired students. The successful candidate will work closely with students and teaching staff to support communication, learning and engagement throughout the school day.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide communication support to deaf and hearing-impaired students across KS3 and KS4, helping them access lessons and participate fully in classroom activities.

  • Use British Sign Language (BSL) to communicate with students and support their understanding of lesson content, instructions and discussions.

  • Work alongside teachers to adapt learning materials and ensure lessons are accessible to students with communication needs.

  • Support students on a 1:1 basis and in small groups, encouraging independence, confidence and social interaction.

  • Help facilitate communication between students, teachers and peers, promoting an inclusive learning environment.

  • Support students during lessons, breaktimes, lunchtimes and wider school activities where required.

  • Monitor students’ progress and engagement, providing feedback to teaching staff where appropriate.

Essential Requirements:

  • BSL Level 2 or above (Level 3/4 desirable, depending on the school’s requirements).

  • Previous experience supporting deaf or hearing-impaired children or young people.

  • A good understanding of communication and language needs.

  • A patient, approachable and supportive manner, with the ability to build positive relationships with students.

The Ideal Candidate:
Someone who is passionate about supporting young people, confident using BSL and able to adapt their communication style to meet individual needs. Experience working within a specialist deaf education setting would be highly beneficial.
