Psychology Graduate – Specialist Learning Support Assistant

£92.56 - £95 SEND Full time

Have you recently graduated in Psychology and want to turn your knowledge of human development, communication and behaviour into a meaningful career?

Engage Education is seeking a compassionate and enthusiastic Psychology Graduate to work as a Learning Support Assistant at specialist school in BD5. This is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a specialist education environment, supporting pupils with additional learning needs and developing skills that could support a future career in educational psychology, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy or specialist teaching.

In this role, you will help create a positive and engaging learning experience for pupils who require individualised support. You will work closely with teachers and other professionals to encourage communication, independence and personal development.

Your responsibilities

  • Individualised Learning: Provide one-to-one and small-group assistance, helping pupils access activities at a level appropriate to their abilities.

  • Communication Development: Encourage pupils to express their needs, make choices and interact with others using appropriate communication approaches.

  • Sensory and Practical Activities: Assist with structured activities that support engagement, exploration and the development of everyday skills.

  • Promoting Independence: Help pupils develop confidence with routines, personal organisation and age-appropriate life skills.

  • Observation and Feedback: Share observations with teachers to help inform support strategies and monitor individual progress.

  • Creating a Positive Environment: Provide patient, consistent support that helps pupils feel safe, valued and ready to learn.

What will help you succeed?

We are particularly interested in graduates who are keen to learn about complex SEND and can bring a thoughtful, person-centred approach to their work.

You will ideally have:

  • A degree in Psychology or a related discipline.

  • An interest in autism, communication differences and additional learning needs.

  • Excellent patience, empathy and observation skills.

  • A flexible approach to supporting pupils with different abilities and communication styles.

  • The ability to work collaboratively as part of a wider school team.

Experience supporting children or young people with SEND is advantageous but not essential if you can demonstrate the right attitude and commitment.
