Looking for a Career That Makes a Difference?
Have you ever considered working in a special needs school? Do you have a background in care, support work, childcare or simply a passion for helping others?
At Engage Education, we are looking for caring, enthusiastic and dedicated individuals to join specialist schools across Leeds, supporting children and young people with a variety of additional needs.
Working in a special needs school is so much more than supporting children in the classroom. It’s about celebrating the little victories, building meaningful relationships, helping children find their voice and giving them the confidence to achieve things they may once have found difficult.
Our schools support pupils with a range of needs, including:
Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC).
ADHD and social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH).
Complex learning difficulties and disabilities.
Speech, language and communication difficulties.
Sensory processing difficulties.
Physical disabilities and medical needs.
Challenging behaviours and emotional regulation difficulties.
Non-verbal pupils and those requiring alternative communication methods.
Every child is different, and every day brings something new!
What Will You Be Doing?
As a Special Needs Teaching Assistant or Support Worker, you will work alongside experienced teachers and support staff to help children access their education, develop independence and enjoy their school experience.
Your day-to-day responsibilities may include:
Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with additional needs.
Helping children engage in classroom activities, play and learning.
Supporting communication, social interaction and emotional development.
Encouraging independence and celebrating individual achievements.
Supporting children who may display challenging behaviours using positive and consistent approaches.
Assisting with personal care and daily routines where required.
Supporting pupils with sensory activities and emotional regulation.
Building positive, trusting relationships with children and their families through appropriate professional communication.
Creating a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment where every child feels valued.
Who Are We Looking For?
You don’t necessarily need to have worked in a school before!
We are keen to hear from people with experience in a variety of settings, including:
Special needs schools and mainstream schools.
Nursery and early years settings.
Residential and children’s care.
Healthcare and nursing support.
Learning disability support.
Autism support services.
Youth work and community support.
Mental health and behavioural support.
Most importantly, we are looking for people who are:
Caring, patient and compassionate.
Resilient and confident adapting to different situations.
Passionate about supporting children with additional needs.
Comfortable building relationships with children who may communicate or behave differently.
Willing to get involved and support with all aspects of school life.
Reliable, enthusiastic and committed to making a difference.
Why Work in a Special Needs School?
Working in specialist education can be one of the most rewarding career choices you make.
It’s about the little things that make a BIG difference.
Seeing a child communicate something independently for the first time.
Helping a pupil overcome a challenge they previously struggled with.
Watching a child build confidence and develop friendships.
Being the person who helps a child feel safe, understood and included.
Celebrating achievements that might seem small to others but mean everything to that child.
You don’t need to have all the answers or years of experience. You need the right attitude, a willingness to learn and a genuine desire to help others.
What Can Engage Education Offer You?
Competitive daily pay of £92.56–£95.
Full-time, part-time and flexible supply opportunities.
Long-term placements and potential permanent opportunities.
Opportunities to gain experience across different specialist schools.
A dedicated recruitment consultant to support you throughout your journey.
Opportunities to develop your skills and build a career within SEND education.
Ready to Make a Difference?
Whether you are an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant, a support worker looking for a change of career, a nursery practitioner or someone looking to get started in education, we would love to hear from you!
If you have a caring nature, plenty of patience and a passion for helping children reach their potential, this could be the opportunity you’ve been looking for.
You could be the person who makes a child’s school day brighter, helps them achieve something new or gives them the confidence to believe in themselves.
