Turn Your English Degree into a Career That Makes a Difference
Are you an English graduate looking for a meaningful first step after university? Want to use your passion for language, literature and communication to inspire the next generation?
Engage Education is looking for enthusiastic English graduates to join our Graduate SEND Teaching Assistant Programme, offering the opportunity to gain paid, hands-on experience in schools while developing the skills and confidence to build a career in education.
Your English degree has given you valuable skills in communication, critical thinking, interpreting language and understanding different perspectives. These are skills that can make a real difference when helping pupils overcome barriers to learning, develop their confidence and discover their own love of learning.
Whether you’re considering becoming an English teacher, exploring a career in education, or simply want to gain meaningful experience working with young people, this programme is an excellent place to start.
No previous school experience is required – full training and ongoing support are provided.
Why Is This a Great Opportunity for an English Graduate?
As an English graduate, you understand the power of words, the importance of communication and how the right support can help someone find their voice. In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to put those skills into practice every day.
You could help a pupil develop their reading and writing skills, encourage a student who struggles to express themselves, or support a young person in building the confidence to participate in lessons.
You’ll gain first-hand insight into how children learn, how teachers adapt their approach to different needs, and how inclusive education can transform a pupil’s experience of school.
It’s an opportunity to turn the knowledge you gained at university into practical experience that can help shape your future career.
About the Role
As a Graduate SEND Teaching Assistant, you will:
Support pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including Autism, social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs, speech and language difficulties, and complex needs.
Help pupils develop their literacy, reading, writing, comprehension and communication skills.
Work alongside teachers to make lessons accessible and engaging for pupils with different learning needs.
Encourage a love of reading, language and learning, helping pupils build confidence in their abilities.
Support students with emotional regulation, behaviour, social interaction and day-to-day classroom routines.
Build positive relationships with pupils, helping them feel understood, included and supported.
Gain experience across primary, secondary and specialist school settings in Brighton and the surrounding areas.
Every day will bring new opportunities to develop your skills, make a positive impact and discover which areas of education interest you most.
What Will You Gain?
Paid experience. Practical training. A clearer path towards your future career.
Our Early Career Teaching Assistant Programme is designed to help graduates develop the skills and experience needed to succeed in a school environment.
You’ll benefit from:
300+ CPD training modules covering areas such as Autism, behaviour management, phonics, safeguarding and inclusive education.
Practical experience supporting pupils with a range of learning needs.
Training in behaviour management, de-escalation and effective communication.
Guidance from experienced educators and education consultants.
The opportunity to explore future pathways into teaching and other education-related careers.
The chance to develop transferable skills in communication, adaptability, teamwork, problem-solving and relationship-building.
The programme combines hands-on school experience with structured CPD training designed by former senior school leaders, delivered in partnership with Creative Education.
You’ll learn how to support pupils with additional needs, use effective classroom strategies and contribute to an environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive.
