Teaching Assistant – Bushey
Are you passionate about supporting children who may struggle with behaviour, emotional regulation and engagement in education?
We are looking for a confident, resilient and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant / Behaviour Mentor to join a specialist setting in Bushey, supporting pupils with a range of Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
This is a Teaching Assistant role with a strong behaviour and mentoring focus, making it ideal for someone who enjoys building relationships with young people, understanding the reasons behind their behaviour and helping them make positive progress.
The Role
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and the wider support team to help pupils overcome barriers to learning and develop the skills they need to succeed.
You will be supporting pupils who may display challenging behaviour, difficulties with emotional regulation, anxiety, low confidence or disengagement from education.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEMH needs
- Building positive, trusting relationships with pupils and acting as a consistent role model
- Supporting pupils to manage their emotions, behaviour and responses to challenging situations
- Using positive behaviour strategies to encourage engagement and reduce disruption
- Helping pupils re-engage with learning following periods of dysregulation or challenging behaviour
- Working alongside teachers to deliver engaging and accessible learning activities
- Supporting pupils to develop their confidence, communication and social skills
- Identifying triggers and responding calmly and consistently to challenging behaviour
- Encouraging positive choices and helping pupils understand boundaries and expectations
- Working closely with teachers and other support staff to maintain a calm and structured environment
- Providing feedback on pupils’ behaviour, engagement and progress
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for someone who is confident, patient and naturally good at connecting with young people.
You may have previous experience as a Teaching Assistant, Behaviour Mentor, Youth Worker, Sports Coach, Support Worker, Residential Worker or within a similar environment.
Most importantly, you will be:
- Calm and resilient when faced with challenging behaviour
- Confident setting clear boundaries whilst remaining approachable
- Naturally good at building rapport with children and young people
- Patient and understanding, with the ability to look beyond behaviour
- Proactive and able to think on your feet
- Consistent in your approach to behaviour management
- Enthusiastic about helping pupils overcome barriers to education
- A strong team player who can work closely with teachers and support staff
Experience working with SEMH, challenging behaviour, Autism, ADHD or other additional needs would be highly beneficial, but transferable experience will also be considered.
