Psychology Graduate – SEMH Learning Support Assistant

Bradford
Full-Time | Monday–Friday | Long-Term | Immediate Start

Are you a Psychology Graduate looking to gain hands-on experience supporting children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs?

Perhaps you’re considering a future career in Educational Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Child Psychology, Mental Health, Therapy, Youth Work or Teaching and want practical experience working directly with vulnerable young people.

We are recruiting a Psychology Graduate Learning Support Assistant to join a specialist SEMH setting in Bradford, supporting young people who may have SEMH needs, ADHD, Autism, anxiety, attachment difficulties, challenging behaviour and barriers to learning.

Many pupils may have experienced disruption to their education and require a consistent, relationship-based approach to help them re-engage with learning.

This is an excellent opportunity to apply the knowledge gained through your Psychology degree within a real-world specialist education environment.

The Role

As a Psychology Graduate Learning Support Assistant, you will work closely with young people who require additional support with their behaviour, emotional regulation, engagement and learning.

Your day-to-day role may include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with SEMH needs
  • Building positive, consistent and trusting relationships with young people
  • Supporting pupils with emotional regulation and challenging behaviour
  • Helping pupils re-engage with education following periods of disengagement
  • Supporting young people with ADHD, anxiety, attachment difficulties and additional SEND
  • Recognising potential triggers and helping to de-escalate challenging situations
  • Providing encouragement, boundaries and positive role modelling
  • Supporting pupils during lessons and helping them remain engaged with learning
  • Observing behaviour and progress and feeding back to teaching and pastoral staff
  • Working alongside experienced Teachers, Behaviour Support Workers and pastoral professionals

This is a hands-on role where relationship building is just as important as academic support.

You’ll gain first-hand experience of how trauma, mental health, behaviour, attachment and additional needs can impact a young person’s education and development.

Who Are We Looking For?

This role would be particularly suited to graduates from degrees including:

  • Psychology
  • Child Psychology
  • Educational Psychology
  • Psychology with Counselling
  • Psychology and Criminology
  • Criminology
  • Childhood Studies
  • Sociology
  • Mental Health or related subjects

Previous school experience is not essential.

We’re particularly interested in graduates who are resilient, confident, patient and able to build positive relationships with young people who may initially be reluctant to engage with adults or education.

Experience within youth work, mental health, residential care, behaviour support, mentoring, SEND, sports coaching, care work or supporting vulnerable young people would be advantageous.

Why Is This a Great Role for a Psychology Graduate?

Working within a specialist SEMH setting can provide invaluable practical experience if you’re considering postgraduate study or a future career within:

Educational Psychology | Clinical Psychology | Child Psychology | Mental Health | Youth Justice | Social Work | Counselling | SEND | Teaching

You’ll gain direct experience supporting young people with SEMH, challenging behaviour, emotional regulation, ADHD, attachment difficulties, anxiety and barriers to education.

You’ll also develop practical skills in relationship building, behaviour management, de-escalation, safeguarding and trauma-informed support.
