We are recruiting a Psychology Graduate Learning Support Assistant to join a specialist SEND school in Manchester, supporting children and young people with a range of additional needs including Autism (ASC), communication difficulties, learning disabilities and complex needs.
This is an excellent opportunity to take the knowledge gained through your Psychology degree and apply it within a real-world specialist setting.
The Role
As a Psychology Graduate Learning Support Assistant, you will work closely with pupils who require additional support to access education, communicate, regulate their emotions and develop greater independence.
Your day-to-day role may include:
- Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEND
- Supporting children with Autism, communication needs and learning difficulties
- Helping pupils with emotional regulation, behaviour and sensory needs
- Building positive and consistent relationships with children and young people
- Supporting communication, social interaction and independence
- Using visual, sensory and alternative communication strategies
- Helping pupils engage with classroom activities and personalised learning
- Observing behaviour and progress and feeding back to teaching staff
- Working alongside experienced Teachers, SEND professionals and support staff
This is a hands-on role, and you will gain direct experience of how additional needs can affect a child’s learning, communication, behaviour, emotional regulation and development.
Who Are We Looking For?
This role would be particularly suited to graduates from degrees including:
- Psychology
- Child Psychology
- Educational Psychology
- Psychology with Counselling
- Psychology and Criminology
- Childhood Studies
- Education Studies
- Sociology
- Mental Health or related subjects
Previous school experience is not essential.
We are more interested in finding someone who is patient, resilient, proactive and genuinely motivated to work with children and young people with additional needs.
Experience within care, youth work, mental health, SEND, Autism support, mentoring, residential care, volunteering or working with vulnerable children or adults would be advantageous.
