SEND Learning Support Assistant – Alternative Education School

Location: Colchester

Salary: £92.56 – £107 per day

Start date: ASAP

Working hours: Monday to Friday 8:30-4pm

Are you a dedicated and compassionate individual with a passion for supporting children and young people with special educational needs? Do you want to make a meaningful impact on their learning journey and overall development? If so, we want to hear from you!

The role:

The role supports the holistic development of pupils within an alternative provision who present with a wide range of SEND needs, including pupils who have experienced trauma and adversity. The post holder will help pupils develop the necessary social and life skills required to be successful in future transitions, provide support and advice to colleagues working with a pupil as part of a reintegration support plan, and deliver bespoke intervention programmes for identified pupils.

You will be based in an Alternative School setting for children ages 5-16 who are unable to attend mainstream schooling. The school caters for pupils who have had significant disruption to their education. Pupils are referred by local authorities, typically because they have been excluded from mainstream schools, special schools or pupil referral units. Pupils typically have complex needs, including autism, social, emotional and mental health needs, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Your responsibilities

  • Delivering individualised support: Work closely with teachers and therapists to deliver personalised learning plans, ensuring that each student’s unique needs and abilities are supported.
  • Creating a stimulating environment: Assist in creating a nurturing, engaging, and creative learning environment that inspires students to explore, learn, and grow.
  • Supporting classroom activities: Help facilitate lessons and activities that are both educational and enjoyable, adapting them as needed to ensure inclusivity for all students.
  • Building relationships: Develop strong and trusting relationships with students, parents, and colleagues, fostering a collaborative and positive atmosphere within the school.
  • Monitoring progress: Observe and document student progress, sharing insights with teachers and therapists to continuously improve their learning experience.
