Are you an experienced Teaching Assistant, Behaviour Support Worker or Learning Support Assistant who is passionate about helping children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs succeed in education?
We are recruiting for a SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a specialist school in Rotherham, supporting pupils across Key Stages 2–4 who require additional behavioural, emotional and academic support.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who enjoys working directly with children in a classroom environment, building positive relationships and helping pupils overcome barriers to learning.
The school supports children with SEMH needs, ADHD, Autism, emotional regulation difficulties and challenging behaviour, providing a nurturing and structured learning environment.
Previous experience supporting children with SEMH, SEND or challenging behaviour is highly desirable.
The Role
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will work alongside teachers and pastoral staff to provide tailored support to pupils who may struggle within a mainstream classroom.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEMH and additional learning needs.
- Supporting teachers with the delivery of engaging, accessible classroom activities.
- Helping pupils remain focused, motivated and engaged in their learning.
- Supporting children with emotional regulation, challenging behaviour and social development.
- Using positive behaviour management and de-escalation strategies.
- Building trusting, professional relationships with pupils who may have experienced difficulties in education.
- Supporting pupils with literacy, numeracy and other curriculum-based activities.
- Encouraging independence, confidence and positive classroom behaviour.
- Helping pupils manage transitions, routines and expectations throughout the school day.
- Working collaboratively with teaching staff, SENCOs and pastoral teams to support individual learning and behaviour plans.
About the School
This specialist SEMH school supports children and young people across KS2–KS4 who require a more personalised approach to education.
Pupils may have a range of additional needs, including:
- Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
- Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Social communication difficulties
- Emotional dysregulation and challenging behaviour
- Trauma, attachment difficulties and anxiety
- Gaps in learning or previous disengagement from education
Many pupils benefit from smaller class sizes, consistent routines, positive relationships and individualised learning support.
The successful candidate will play an important role in helping children feel safe, supported and ready to learn.
Who Are We Looking For?
We would love to hear from individuals with experience in:
- SEMH Teaching Assistant or SEND Teaching Assistant roles
- Behaviour Support or Learning Support
- Specialist schools, Alternative Provision or PRUs
- Mainstream schools supporting pupils with additional needs
- Youth Work or Children’s Residential Care
- Mental Health Support or Pastoral Support
- Supporting children with Autism, ADHD or challenging behaviour
You do not need a formal Teaching Assistant qualification if you have strong, relevant experience supporting children or young people.
We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate confidence supporting both classroom learning and behavioural needs.
The Ideal Candidate
You will be:
- Experienced in supporting children or young people with additional needs.
- Confident managing challenging behaviour calmly and professionally.
- Able to encourage pupils to engage in learning and classroom activities.
- Patient, resilient and emotionally aware.
- Skilled at building positive relationships while maintaining clear boundaries.
- Comfortable supporting pupils with varying academic abilities.
- Understanding of safeguarding and the importance of a trauma-informed approach.
- Reliable, proactive and committed to making a positive difference.
