January can feel like a long month for everyone, and for those working in schools, the post-holiday return can be especially demanding. Blue Monday is an annual day that is often regarded as one of the trickiest days of the year. It typically falls on the third Monday in January; for 2026, it falls on the 19th of January.
The timing isn’t accidental. For many people, this point in January comes with darker mornings, colder weather, financial pressure after the festive period, and New Year goals start to feel harder to maintain. This day shines a light on mental health, a reminder to check in with ourselves, recognise when things feel tough, and know that support is always available.
Everyone experiences low moods differently, but small, intentional actions can help make a meaningful difference. Here are a few simple strategies that you can try:
Even on a challenging day, small moments in the classroom can lift your mood and create a positive atmosphere for your pupils too.
Kick off your day with a simple task you know you can complete. Small wins set a positive tone and can give your energy a boost right from the start. This could be something quick and light-hearted with your class, or simply ticking off an easy admin task first thing.
Take a few minutes to stretch, walk or do a quick movement break. Even a short burst of activity can lift your mood and help you feel more energised throughout the day for you and your students.
Share a funny story with the class or a classroom success with a fellow teacher. Connecting with others and hearing laughter can brighten your day.
Let in some natural light during your lessons. A brighter environment (weather dependent…) can make both you and your students feel more awake and positive.
Take a couple of minutes for deep breathing or a short meditation. Pausing to focus on our breath can calm our minds and reduce stress even on a busy school day. UK teachers can also access Headspace, a meditation and mindfulness app that offers free access for educators. It includes guided sessions for stress, sleep, focus and tools to bring mindfulness into the classroom.
