A guide to the costs of relocating to the UK as an international teacher

Moving to the UK as a teacher is an exciting new chapter, one that thousands of international teachers embark on every year. Whether you’re coming from Africa, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Australia, or the Americas, teaching in the UK is a realistic and achievable goal with the right preparation and support.

One of the most common questions that Engage Education advises international teachers on when they decide to relocate is how much it costs to move to the UK. This guide provides a clear breakdown of the real costs of moving to the UK as a teacher, so you know what to expect.

The data referenced in this blog was collected in December 2025. Costs are subject to change and may vary based on economic conditions, seasonal demand and your point of origin.

1. Visa costs for teachers moving to England

For most international teachers, visa costs are the largest upfront expense when relocating. The exact amount you’ll pay depends on the visa route you’re eligible for and the length of your stay. Most international teachers enter the UK through one of these routes:

Skilled Worker Visa:

A popular route for qualified teachers.

  • Visa fee: £719-£1,420
  • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £1,035 per year

UK Ancestry Visa:

If you have a UK-born grandparent, the UK Ancestry visa is an ideal and cost-effective option.

  • Visa fee: £637
  • IHS: £1,035 per year

Other possible routes

(If you meet the criteria)

  • Youth Mobility Scheme
  • High Potential Individual Visa
  • Family routes

Our international hub provides country-specific information on visa types.

All routes include NHS healthcare access and permission to work in England. Calculate your cost here.

2. Flights to England:

The cost of flights to the UK varies depending on your departure and destination country, time of year, and how early you book, but most people pay between £350-£800 for a one-way ticket.

Booking early, being flexible with travel dates and avoiding peak holiday periods can significantly reduce flight costs. Check out Skyscanner to find the most affordable and convenient flights!

3. Accommodation costs in England

Many international teachers choose to start by staying in shared housing while they settle into life in the UK.

Typical monthly costs outside of London:

  • Shared house: £450-£800
  • 1-bedroom flat: £850-£1,200

You will usually need to pay:

  • A deposit (typically one month’s rent)
  • First month’s rent upfront

Rent prices are generally much lower outside of London and the South East. The UK has many safe, affordable areas with excellent schools. Some teachers begin with short-term accommodation while they find their feet before securing a longer-term rental.

4. Monthly living expenses

Life in the UK is manageable on a teacher’s salary. Average monthly amounts:

  • Transport: £70-£150
  • Groceries: £150-£250
  • Utilities: £120-£160
  • Phone plan: £10-£20
  • Personal/spending: £50-£150

Most teachers find their cost of living stabilises within the first two months as they settle into regular routines.
