Location: Wakefield
Pay: £92.56–£95 per day
Hours: 07:45am – 15:10pm Monday to Friday
Job Type: Full-time, Long-term / Temp to Perm

About the Role

At Engage Education, we specialise in recruiting dedicated and passionate support staff for schools across Wakefield. We are currently looking to appoint a caring, resilient and enthusiastic SEN Teaching Assistant to work within a secondary school’s specialist resourced provision, supporting pupils across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (KS3 and KS4).

The resourced provision caters for secondary-aged pupils with a range of additional needs, including Autism, ADHD, complex learning difficulties, speech, language and communication needs (SLCN), sensory processing difficulties and social, emotional and behavioural needs.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting young people with SEND and helping them overcome barriers to learning, develop their independence and achieve their full potential.

We are particularly interested in candidates with previous experience working within a secondary school, specialist SEN setting or those who come from a care, support work, youth work or residential background and are looking to transfer their skills into education.

The Role

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and other support staff to provide tailored 1:1 and small-group support to pupils within the resourced provision.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils across KS3 and KS4.

  • Supporting students with Autism, ADHD, communication difficulties and complex learning needs.

  • Helping pupils access the secondary curriculum through adapted learning activities and individualised support.

  • Supporting students with their literacy, numeracy and wider curriculum development.

  • Encouraging independence, confidence and positive social interaction.

  • Supporting pupils with emotional regulation and implementing positive behaviour strategies.

  • Managing challenging behaviours using a calm, patient and consistent approach.

  • Helping students develop essential life skills, communication and preparation for adulthood.

  • Building positive relationships and acting as a supportive and encouraging role model.

  • Working collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs and other professionals to meet individual pupil needs.

You will need to be adaptable and confident supporting young people with different abilities, personalities and learning needs. The ability to build trust, establish positive relationships and encourage engagement will be essential.

What We’re Looking For

  • Previous experience working with children or young people with special educational needs.

  • Experience within a secondary school, specialist SEN school or resourced provision is desirable.

  • Alternatively, a background in care, support work, youth work, residential care or behavioural support.

  • An understanding of Autism, ADHD, communication difficulties and additional learning needs.

  • Confidence supporting young people who may display challenging behaviours.

  • A patient, resilient and empathetic approach.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with teenagers.

  • The ability to adapt your approach to suit different learning styles and individual needs.

  • A genuine passion for supporting young people with SEND and helping them develop their independence.

Candidates with transferable experience from care, support work and youth work backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. Previous experience in a school is desirable but not essential if you have relevant experience supporting individuals with additional needs.

What We Offer

  • Full-time, Monday–Friday working hours, 08:30am–15:30pm.

  • Competitive daily rate of £92.56–£95.

  • Long-term opportunity with potential for a permanent position.

  • The opportunity to gain valuable experience within a secondary SEND setting.

  • A supportive school team and specialist provision.

  • Dedicated support from your own Engage Education recruitment consultant.

  • Opportunities to develop your skills and progress within the education sector.

Interested?

If you have experience supporting children or young people with additional needs and are looking for a rewarding opportunity within secondary education, we would love to hear from you!
