Are you passionate about helping children and young people overcome barriers to learning, manage their emotions and achieve their potential?

Do you have experience supporting children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Autism, ADHD, challenging behaviour or additional learning needs?

We are recruiting a Learning & Behaviour Support Worker to join a specialist school supporting children and young people across KS1–KS4 who require a nurturing, structured and personalised approach to education.

This role goes beyond traditional Teaching Assistant responsibilities. You will play an important part in supporting pupils academically, socially and emotionally, helping them build confidence, develop positive behaviours and re-engage with their education.

The Role

Working closely with teachers, therapists and pastoral staff, you will support children and young people who may have experienced trauma, disrupted education, emotional regulation difficulties or significant barriers to learning.

Your responsibilities will include:

Providing 1:1 and small-group learning support, helping pupils access lessons and make academic progress.

Supporting pupils with SEMH needs, ADHD, Autism, attachment difficulties and challenging behaviour.

Helping children develop emotional regulation, resilience, confidence and positive relationships.

Adapting learning activities to meet individual needs, abilities and learning styles.

Using positive behaviour management, de-escalation and therapeutic approaches to support pupils during challenging situations.

Encouraging engagement in English, Maths and wider curriculum activities, helping pupils overcome barriers to learning.

Building consistent, trusting relationships with pupils who may struggle within traditional classroom environments.

Working collaboratively with teaching and pastoral teams to support individual learning targets and EHCP outcomes.

Who Are We Looking For?

We are particularly interested in individuals with experience in:

SEMH schools, SEND schools, Alternative Provision or Pupil Referral Units (PRUs).

Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, Behaviour Mentor or Pastoral Support roles.

Children’s residential care, youth work, family support or therapeutic support.

Supporting children who have experienced trauma, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) or attachment difficulties.

Supporting pupils with challenging behaviour while maintaining a positive focus on their education and development.

Previous school experience is desirable but not essential if you have strong transferable experience supporting vulnerable children and young people.

The ideal candidate will be patient, resilient, emotionally intelligent and proactive, with the ability to build meaningful relationships while maintaining clear boundaries and high expectations.

You must be comfortable supporting pupils with both their learning and emotional wellbeing, recognising that successful education starts with children feeling safe, understood and supported.
