Therapeutic Teaching Assistant Required – Lancing

1:1 Support | Trauma-Informed Education | Immediate Opportunity

At Engage Education, we’re looking for a compassionate, resilient and proactive Therapeutic Teaching Assistant to support pupils at a warm and welcoming school in Lancing.

This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who understands the importance of building trusting relationships and supporting children with complex social, emotional and mental health needs. The school takes a nurturing, therapeutic approach, helping pupils feel safe, understood and supported so they can develop emotionally, build confidence and engage positively with their education.

Pupils may experience anxiety, emotional dysregulation, challenging behaviour, attachment difficulties or the effects of trauma. You’ll play a vital role in helping them navigate these challenges through consistent support, positive relationships and a calm, patient approach.

This role is about more than managing behaviour. It’s about understanding what may be behind it, recognising that behaviour can be a form of communication, and helping pupils develop the emotional regulation skills, trust and resilience they need to thrive.

Previous experience supporting children with SEMH needs, trauma or attachment difficulties is highly desirable. However, applications are also welcomed from candidates with transferable experience in youth work, care, mentoring or other supportive roles. Training and ongoing development will be available.

About You

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has experience supporting children or young people with complex emotional needs, challenging behaviour or additional needs.
  • Understands the importance of a trauma-informed, empathetic and relationship-led approach.
  • Can remain calm, patient and consistent when supporting pupils through emotionally challenging situations.
  • Is confident setting clear, appropriate boundaries while maintaining a warm, nurturing approach.
  • Can build trusting, professional relationships with pupils and help them feel safe, valued and understood.
  • Understands the importance of emotional regulation, positive reinforcement and consistent behaviour support.
  • Is resilient, adaptable and able to respond sensitively to individual needs.
  • Is passionate about helping children overcome barriers to learning and reach their potential.

Who Should Apply?

We’d particularly welcome applications from candidates with experience as:

  • Youth Workers – experienced in building relationships with young people and supporting their emotional and social development.
  • Behaviour Mentors – confident supporting pupils to manage their emotions, develop positive behaviours and overcome barriers to learning.
  • SEN Teaching Assistants – experienced in providing individualised support for pupils with additional needs.
  • Support Workers or Care Workers – skilled in providing patient, consistent and compassionate support to individuals with complex needs.

Experience of trauma-informed practice, attachment difficulties or therapeutic approaches would be particularly beneficial.
