Teaching Assistant Training Programme

Are you looking to build up your knowledge and experience as a TA?

Our training programme for TAs (ETAP) gives people the knowledge and confidence to work in schools, and removes the barrier for people who may not have previously considered a role as a TA within a school.  ETAP is a great opportunity whether you’re a university graduate or looking for a change in career to consider and take your first steps within a role in the education sector.

How does the training work?

Your ETAP journey will start by completing a course on our partners’ CPD portal. This course will provide you with the necessary information needed to widen your knowledge, build your confidence and help you to understand what to expect and what’s expected of you in a TA role.

The introductory course will cover:

  • Enhanced Safeguarding Pathway
  • How to be a great Teaching Assistant
  • Special Needs Awareness Pathway

Pick your TA route!

Once you’ve completed your initial training and depending on which type of school you want to work in, we’ll then provide you with some additional training, covering either  Primary, Secondary or SEND.

Primary

  • Support children with their reading
  • Support children with their writing
  • Getting started with phonics
  • Effectively working with other adults in school

Secondary

  • Establishing relationships with students you don’t know
  • Managing pupil’s behaviour to improve learning
  • Prevent poor behaviour by motivating and engaging pupils
  • Effectively working with other adults in school

SEND

  • Differentiate your approach to safeguarding with SEND pupils
  • Understanding the link between abuse and mental health

To make sure you find the perfect school for your first role as a TA, we’ll ask you to complete paid trial days in local schools. Our trial days are a great opportunity to see the school, explore the class you’ll be working in and interact with students that you will be supporting!

Your dedicated consultant will prepare and support you throughout any interviews, and by working with Engage you also get access to our P&D Team who can help you throughout your time with us.
