Welcome to the teaching profession!

You are part of a dedicated community of people across the world who understand that education and your teaching dramatically changes the direction of the lives of young people. Your role is integral in providing new opportunities.

So why did you choose to go into teaching?

Was it because a teacher you had changed the way you looked at yourself and made you believe you could do anything?

Did a teacher inspire a love of a particular subject or teaching in general?

Do you prefer the company of young, idealistic and enthusiastic people with a world of new ideas and perspectives?

Do you want to make a difference in the lives of children who need a champion?

Do you love to perform every day?

Do you feel like it was the best job based on your skills?

Maybe you don’t really know - maybe you just didn’t know what to do?

Maybe you love surfing and travelling and are hoping you can squeeze that into the school holidays each year?

Everyone comes to teaching for different reasons. It doesn’t really matter why you are here. It only matters that you turn up, that you make each day count, work hard to be the best teacher you can be, ask for help when you need it and be gentle with yourself as you learn.

You are valued, even if you hear differently and you have a degree that can take you into the lives of young people all over the world. Your skills will translate into many different careers and down different paths.

Those first few years of teaching can be the hardest. Finding good quality professional development, an available and capable mentor and a community of new and experienced teachers will work wonders and help you come out the side of your initial years a stronger, positive and capable teacher. Remember that the students who need you the most will likely seem like they want your help the least.
