Why is Suffolk such a popular location to teach?

For many years Suffolk has been a desirable and largely affordable county to live in, with mid-Suffolk in particular offering some of the highest quality of life in Britain.

Residents of Suffolk can enjoy a rural lifestyle with easy access to the beach. Suffolk Coast and Heaths – which stretches from Lowestoft to Manningtree – is classed as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Suffolk is also rich in history. Framlingham Castle is famous as the site where Mary I gathered her forces before taking the throne in 1553. Beautiful medieval properties are prevalent here and their affordable cost makes the county an attractive place to live.

What about commuting?

The London commute is around an hour and a half from most of Suffolk’s largest towns, and residents who want to live in one of the county’s many pretty villages can also easily commute to Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket or Felixstowe.

Is it expensive to live in Suffolk?

Suffolk is very affordable and it’s much cheaper than London. Take a look at Suffolk in numbers:

• The average rent of a one-bedroom apartment in Ipswich is £527 pcm, compared to £1,662 pcm in London
• The cost of living for a single person in Ipswich is £451 pcm, compared to £772 pcm in London

But if you fancy a weekend in the Big Smoke, the journey from Ipswich to London Liverpool Street by train takes just 1 hour 10 minutes.

What are the schools like in Suffolk?

Of the 541 registered schools in the Suffolk area:

• 68 were rated outstanding in their last OFSTED inspection, 286 good, 46 require improvement and 19 were rated as inadequate
• 185 are academies, 293 are maintained schools, 30 are independent, 29 are special educational needs schools and 4 are colleges
• 467 are primary schools, 113 are secondary schools and 68 are schools for those aged 16-18
• 358 have no religious character and 182 are Christian faith schools, (165 are Church of England, 14 Roman Catholic, 1 Methodist and 2 Other).
• In Suffolk independent schools in particular perform well, with Ipswich School and Ipswich High School for Girls ranking in the top 10 independent secondary schools in East Anglia, according to the Sunday Times Schools Guide 2018.
