The summer holidays bring with them a welcome break from school, but you may be wondering how you can continue to support yourself financially over the summer weeks – especially if you’re a supply teacher. At Engage, we’re here to suggest some ways that you can make and save money while still making the most of the holidays.
Working over the holidays doesn’t just bring with it a welcome influx of funds, but also gives you the opportunity to flex your mind over the summer, making the return to school less of a shock to your system when the time comes. Lots of teachers choose to become tutors over the summer, catering to the many children who supplement the break in their learning with tutored lessons over the summer.
At Engage, we’re working with Club Excel, helping to provide tutoring to the children who attend the summer camp and other activities on offer. If you would like to tutor with Club Excel, there are opportunities every weekday throughout the summer. You can contact us to find out more at email@example.com to speak to the Teaching & Learning team.
If you’ve had enough of teaching but want to put your skills with children and DBS checks to good use, working at an activity centre or summer camp can be a great use of your time, where you can make money and have fun at the same time!
As well as tutors, Club Excel hires Activity Coaches, Early Years Leaders, Camp Directors, and Assistant Camp Directors. Working at an activity camp has the added benefit of expanding your experience of working with children, which is an attractive quality for all teachers! You can apply to work with Club Excel here, call them on 01923 469475, or send an email expressing your interest to firstname.lastname@example.org.
There will likely also be summer activity centres in your area, so you can play to your strengths and find a summer activity that suits you.
You can use your education and skills as a teacher to mark exams in the early weeks of the summer. You can earn £500 to £1000 per exam series as a marker, while boosting your career, CV and personal development. As an examiner, you’ll mark exam papers in your subject from home, usually through an online system or occasionally on paper scripts. It’s a good way to boost your income for the summer and you receive complete training and support before and during the marking period.
A penny saved is a penny earned! If you’re planning to go on holiday during the summer break, why not check out our exclusive deal with STA Travel for Engage teachers. This deal entitles Engage teachers and support to 10% off tours and insurance with this fantastic travel company.
STA travel are experts in adventure travel and have tours and holidays available across the globe. So no matter where you want to go, check out the savings you could make with STA. To find your trip, click here.
If you’re a supply teacher with Engage, you may have chosen to work with our umbrella company, Orange Genie. Working with Orange Genie gives you benefits including discounts at major supermarkets, shops and restaurants. You can save hundreds of pounds on day to day items by using these discounts where possible.
Many of us accrue unnecessary items throughout the year. Unwanted christmas gifts, clothes that don’t fit, and unused appliances can take up your storage space whereas selling your items on ebay, or taking them to a car boot sale, can end up making you a surprising amount of cash as well as freeing up all that space! The end of the school year is the perfect time to refresh your home, and having a clear our is a great place to start.
There are plenty of ways to save money over the summer, but most importantly you should remember to relax and enjoy the break. If you want to know about how you can make money as a teacher or member of support staff when September rolls around, get in touch or check out our great vacancies.
If you would like to start your teaching adventure in the UK, register with Engage Education today! One of our Toronto-based team members will be in touch with you as soon as possible to walk you through the process or invite you to our up-coming iday event!
