How To Get More Supply Teacher Work

When you start out working as a Supply Teacher, you may already have some connections with schools. Deciding where to work and which roles you want to work in will be entirely up to you – it’s a really rewarding way to teach and allows you to experience a multitude of different classroom environments (and individuals!) If you want to make supply teaching your main job, you’ll need to put a little effort into finding the kind of roles that will challenge and reward you successfully!

Specific Searches

Searching for the perfect role is almost an art. Most job sites will allow you to create specific searches to find the perfect roles, searching by job type, subject or location. It will help to have a good idea of the areas you are happy to work in, and how far you are willing to travel. You can use our live vacancies map to explore areas of the UK, and click on the regions below the map for detailed information about each area, from amenities to transport links. You can also set alerts up for all our vacancies – so you’ll never miss the best opportunities.

Make Connections

Supply teachers often rely on their own contacts and network to hear about job opportunities. Linkedin is a really useful way to keep track of your contacts and find out about opportunities. Setting up a profile is easy, and you’ll be able to connect with colleagues you meet as you carry out your work in different schools. Recruiters use it too – make sure you follow Engage for lots of exclusive teaching content.

Keep Learning

Constantly adding to your own knowledge is essential for all teachers, especially supply teachers who could find themselves teaching different subjects, to different ages from one term to the next! If you are an Engage candidate, don’t forget to utilise our partnership with Creative Education to access top-notch CPD – our candidates get free access. Adding to your specialist knowledge, in specific subjects, SEND education or leadership will put you in a great position if you want to take on a permanent role in the future.

Join A Top Agency

Around 76% of supply teachers in the UK get their work from agencies. Choose the right agency and you’ll have access to exclusive benefits and opportunities, as well as a steady supply of work. Research online and speak to colleagues that you trust for their recommendations. Read up on agency reviews and testimonials and consider working exclusively if you find an agency you like – you’ll be a higher priority when new opportunities arise. Always look for an agency that’s part of the CCS Framework – as recommended by the Department For Education. The framework means supply teachers are guaranteed a fair deal – visit our Frequently Asked Questions for more info.
