5 Back To School Tricks To Save Time In September

Suddenly, it seems that September is just around the corner, and if you are anything like us, you’ll have left quite a few things to the last minute. We’ve put together 5 ways you can save time and energy in your school prep this year – leaving you more time to enjoy the last of the summer sun!

Use Free Planning Resources

Teachers are traditionally organised folk, which is why you’ll find the internet awash with tips and tricks for getting your kit ready for the new year. We’ve got our own printable checklist to help organise your stationery and supplies here. We also love this detailed checklist for new teachers provided by Resilient Educator.

It’s worth research which planning tools you’ll be using before the term starts. There’s a comprehensive list of planning, organisation and networking apps for teachers available through Scholastic. You might prefer to use a paper diary – if so, filling out your important dates, holidays and term times will save you significant time (and missed deadlines!) over the year.

Organise, Prepare, Organise, Prepare

Organising your work wardrobe is one of the least-spoken about teacher hacks there is. Teachers are in a unique position when it comes to work clothes – they have to tread a fine balance between appropriateness and showing a bit of personality. Separate your work and recreation clothes, make sure everything you like to wear for teaching is clean and has all its buttons. This will save you time every morning, as well as giving the impression of being sartorially pulled together!

Meal prep is another hack that’s gained popularity (especially on Pinterest!) over the last few years. The idea of batch cooking and preparing your meals for the following week isn’t new, but it’s a significant time-saver for teachers and means you can have more control over your nutritional intake. It’s not really a hack, but eating right is essential for providing your body with the energy it needs to be an active teacher.

Take Shortcuts

Teacher Hacks are big news. We found these easy ideas that any teacher can try, to save time creating displays in your classroom. We also have our own guide to easy Classroom Decorating For Beginners! We’ve got a whole board of teacher hacks and time-savers on Pinterest – from printing on sticky notes to create moveable labels to simple, cheap ideas for storage and displays. Explore all our boards for lots of time-saving ideas for teachers, support staff and anyone working in schools!

PLan Emergency Lessons

Having a selection of activities, lesson plans and ideas to fall back on when you are faced with an over-excited class, rainy breaktime or an especially quick task-finisher will prevent you from scrambling for things to do in the moment. Save yourself time and energy by utilising ready-made resources for teachers (Twinkl has an extensive library of resources on all subjects, from Early Years to Sixth Form) to create your own toolbox of standby activities for you or a cover teacher to utilise.
